A new option for reassigning medals

Paris 2024

The OCOG Paris 2024 can rub its hands: its “Park of Champions” at the Trocadéro (photo above), imagined as one of the places of celebration for Olympic medalists, could also be used by the IOC for reattribution ceremonies. medals from previous Games. The executive commission decided on Wednesday March 20, on the second day of its meeting in Lausanne. A decision presented as “ exceptional », taken at the request of its Athletes' Commission. Until then, it was agreed that the medals could be reallocated, in particular after cases of doping, during the following edition of the Olympic Games, at the Youth Games, at the IOC headquarters or at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, during an event of the national Olympic committee or the international federation, or finally on occasion a private ceremony. The list is already long and the options numerous, but the IOC therefore wishes to add the Paris 2024 Champions Park. Explanation from the Finnish Emma Tehro, the president of the IOC Athletes' Commission: “ With very strong support from our colleagues on the Paris 2024 Athletes Committee, we have decided to recommend strengthening the opportunities for athletes receiving reallocated Olympic medals by adding, as an exception, the option of the Champions Park to Paris 2024. We are very pleased to see that the athletes' voice is at the heart of the decision-making process and that the IOC Executive Board supports our recommendation."
