For the French Alps 2030, Val d'Isère remains an alternative

A look back for the IOC Winter Games Future Host Commission. On the second day of its visit to the French Alps, the only application selected for the privileged dialogue phase with a view to the Games in 2030, the delegation visited some of the sites of the Albertville Games in 22.

In La Plagne, in particular, where the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton track is still in service. Also in Courchevel, the resort which hosted the ski jumping and Nordic combined events.

In the French Alps file, Courchevel must share alpine skiing with Méribel. But the problem is that the concentration of the events could disrupt the schedule in the event of bad weather for several days. According to a report from the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), revealed by Ski Chrono, at least three days of bad weather conditions leading to the postponement of competitions “ could seriously affect not only the overall calendar, but also the organization's ability to maintain competition venues at the highest level."

A sufficient risk to put Val d’Isère back in the race? Asked about such an option, the president of the future host commission, the Austrian Karl Stoss (photo above, center), was rather evasive. “ Val d’Isère remains an alternative”he replied.

Christophe Dubi, the director of the Olympic Games at the IOC, is more direct: “ There is a meteorological risk that is even higher when we concentrate so many events... And even higher if we add another event in such a restricted space with the ladies' Nordic combined."

Another concern: the IOC would estimate that with alpine skiing and ski jumping in a limited area, it will be difficult to accommodate the 13.000 spectators planned in the French Alps bid. For Laurent Wauquiez, president of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (AURA), “ Val d'Isère is not an option, it must be integrated into the site map. »

Without a doubt. But nothing will be decided before the report is submitted to the IOC Executive Board, for its meeting on June 12.
