The Netherlands fears computer espionage

Beijing 2022

Unpublished. According to the daily de Volkskrant, the Dutch Olympic Committee has asked members of its delegation to leave their personal electronic devices at home when flying to China for the Beijing 2022 Games. The request mainly concerns phones and laptops. The reason: a risk of espionage on the part of the Chinese authorities. Geert Slot, the spokesperson for the Dutch Olympic body, explained this to de Volkskrant : " Cybersecurity has of course taken on greater importance in recent years, but China represents a very special case, as its authorities have completely locked down their Internet”. The thirty Dutch athletes present at the Beijing Games, but also their management, will not be disconnected during their stay in China, within the Olympic bubble. They will be equipped with telephones rented on site, in order to protect their personal data from possible hackers.
