Russia and athletics in the lead

Doping

Interesting study carried out by the American Olympic statistician Bill Mallon on doping at the Olympic Games. It reveals, without much surprise, that Russia largely leads the ranking of countries most sanctioned for anti-doping rule violations. It has 115, all sports combined, since the Mexico Olympics in 1968. Ukraine follows at a good distance, with 39 cases, ahead of Belarus (35), the United States (22), and Turkey (20). Another result from Bill Mallon's statistics: the two sports most affected by doping cases at the Olympic Games, winter and summer, are athletics (207) and weightlifting (119). They are followed by cross-country skiing (38), wrestling (22), and biathlon (14). Athletics and weightlifting alone therefore account for more than 60% of sanctioned offenses. But the American makes it clear: athletics has, on average, eight times more competitors in the Olympic Games than weightlifting.
