The Paris 2024 Games promise, financially speaking, to be a very good deal for Hong Kong athletes. And even a real jackpot for the medalists. One of the members of the Legislative Council, Michael Luk Chung-hung, publicly expressed his wish last week that the government would partner with the private sector to contribute to the bonuses granted to the country's athletes who won a medal. At the Tokyo 2020 Games, where Hong Kong won six medals including a gold by fencer Cheung Ka-long (photo above), a jackpot of 5 million HK dollars (around 600.000 euros at current prices) was allocated by the National Olympic Committee and the Hong Kong Jockey Club for each gold medal. It is almost certain that this sum will be at least identical for the Paris 2024 Games. But Luk Chung-hung hopes that the government will be able to match it and thus increase the prize money to 10 million HK dollars in the event of an Olympic title, or 1,2 million euros.
