Threat to SportAccord

China

The noose is tightening. A new series of sporting events planned in China over the next two months have just been officially canceled or postponed. The organizers of the Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix, initially scheduled for April 19 in Shanghai, have announced the postponement of the event. Their decision was taken in agreement with the Chinese Motor Sports Federation and the FIA. The cause is the coronavirus epidemic. No new date has been announced yet. At the same time, the executive committee of the International Climbing Federation (ISCF) decided on Tuesday February 11, after a teleconference between its various members, that there would be no ISCF-branded competition in China for the month of April 2020. Two stages of the World Cup were to take place there during this month, in Chongqing and Wujiang respectively. With cancellations now affecting April events, it now seems quite likely that SportAccord 2020 will soon join the list. The international convention is scheduled for April 19-24 in Beijing. It could be relocated. The city of Lausanne has already applied.
