The 2021 Winter Universiade puzzle

FISU

Will the Swiss city of Lucerne retain the organization of the 2021 Winter Universiade? At this stage of the health crisis, all scenarios remain possible. Eric Saintrond, the general secretary of FISU, told the site Around the Rings : Lucerne remains the first choice for hosting the world university sports event, the next edition of which has been postponed. It was to take place from January 21 to 31, 2021. But the postponement of the Universiade does not make FISU's task easier. “ Lucerne is quite complicated, because the agreement we have involves six cantons, explained Eric Saintrond to Around the Rings. We must now discuss with each of the governments of the six cantons to agree on a new date and another period. It is not so easy. » FISU sent a questionnaire to its members, in order to survey their preferences regarding the best date to postpone the event. Two thirds of the responses suggest organizing the next Winter Universiade in December 2021. But FISU does not rule out the possibility of postponing it to January or March 2022. In all cases, the university body wants to give priority to Switzerland to host the competition.
