The Women’s Masters heads to Cancun

Tennis

Heading to Mexico for the Women's Tennis Masters. The WTA announced Thursday September 7 that the next edition of the tournament would take place from October 29 to November 5, 2023 in Cancun. The professional players' association explained in a press release that it had studied several offers before selecting the Mexican seaside city, based on " a certain number of parameters including the logistical reception of players, accessibility in terms of transport, the capacity to accommodate the public and a commitment to supporting and promoting women's tennis. » The Chinese city of Shenzen was a candidate to host the Masters, now renamed the WTA Finals, but it was not selected. The WTA also ruled out the idea of organizing the tournament in Saudi Arabia, an option which held the rope for a long time before triggering controversy, several former players including Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova having publicly taken a stance against this possibility. The Professional Players Association (ATP) did not have the same reluctance. It announced last month that the Next Gen Masters, open to the season's best players aged under 22, would take place until 2027 in the Saudi city of Jeddah.
