Athletes will no longer be the poor relations of the governance of the Olympic movement in the United States. The American Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) published a series of changes to its statutes earlier this week. The most important concerns the representation of athletes within its board of directors. It will increase from 20 to 33%. Athlete representatives will now account for a third of the USOPC council membership. This announcement comes less than a month after American parliamentarians proposed legislation intended to monitor the functioning and governance of the USOPC much more closely.
