Reacting to the announcement of the composition of the new European Commission, which makes no explicit mention of sport, the representative of the European Olympic Committees to the European Union, Folker Hellmund, has just published the following statement: “ With the adoption of the European Treaty, sport became a competence of the Union. Sport represents 3,7% of European GDP, employs 15 million people and fully participates in social cohesion, public health and economic growth. It is therefore surprising and disappointing that sport is being neglected by the new European Commission. This is a negative message addressed to the sporting community and European society as a whole. I am counting on the members of the European Parliament, who will lead the hearings of the new Commissioners, to raise this subject and ensure that sport can continue to fully exploit its potential under this new Commission. ».
