Cost reduction is not just the IOC’s priority. The America’s Cup also seems determined to scale back. The next edition of the oldest sailing event in the world, scheduled for 2017 in Bermuda, could be contested on much smaller catamarans than the 22 m racing cars competing in 2013. According to a press release published on the competition website, the boat ultimately selected for the next Louis-Vuitton Cup – the competition intended to decide between the “challengers” – and the America’s Cup itself could be an AC45 with a length of 13,45 m. “It is clear that if we raced in 2017 on smaller boats, we could reduce costs drastically, without sacrificing anything in terms of spectacle and design,” explains the text. This development will be submitted to a vote by competitors before the end of March.
