Taranto 2026 already threatened by delays

Mediterranean games

Threat of bad weather for the next edition of the Mediterranean Games, scheduled for 2026 in the Italian city of Taranto. Two years and a few months before the event, the work has still not started. And they risk being delayed by a dispute between regional national authorities. According to the Roman daily Il Fatto Quotidiano, the Italian government has decided to take action on the renovation of the main stadium and the construction of a new aquatic center, two projects whose cost is estimated at 275 million euros. After analyzing the project, he considers that the work is not his responsibility, but falls under the " regional jurisdiction ». The only problem, but a major one: at this stage there is no agreement between the organizing committee of the 2026 Mediterranean Games and the Puglia region. Consequence: it is impossible, without a formal contract, to launch calls for tenders. Massimo Ferrarese, the general director of the organizing committee, makes no secret: it seems unlikely that the work will be completed in time for the Games. Initially scheduled for June 2026 (13 to 22), the next Mediterranean Games were postponed later in the year, from August 21 to September 3, a more favorable period in terms of climate.
