Taekwondo diplomacy

Korea

After table tennis, will taekwondo become a “diplomatic” sport? Moon Jae-in, the new South Korean president, inaugurated last month, made a surprise visit at the start of the weekend to the individual World Championships, currently being organized in Muju. He attended the opening ceremony of the competition, Saturday June 24. The head of state took the opportunity to call for a meeting of the two Koreas during the PyeongChang 2018 Games. “The participation of North Korean athletes in the PyeongChang Games would contribute to the realization of the Olympic ideal , which is about bringing people together and bringing peace to the world,” expressed Moon Jae-in. The North Korean delegation to the World Taekwondo Championships in Muju is led by Chang Ung, the North Korean member of the IOC. He must take advantage of his presence to discuss with South Korean officials the next Winter Games and the possibility of a joint women's ice hockey team, or even sharing the alpine skiing events.
