FIL's strategy to reduce its carbon footprint

Luge

reach 20 to 25% less CO2 emissions each seasonAll this without reducing the number of competitions and without imposing constraints on athletes: that is the goal set by the International Luge Federation (FIL). She identified several levers for action to achieve this.

The first step: constructing its schedule. The FIL simulates broadcasts according to different versions of the competition schedule in order tooptimize travel and group events geographically, with regional blocks. The data collected facilitates decision-making and allows, according to FIL calculations, for reduce travel-related emissions by 30% each year (a saving of approximately 120 tonnes of CO2). The FIL also wants to emphasize the shared mobilityIn Asia, centralized shuttle systems have been implemented, allowing teams to travel together rather than using individual vehicles.

She also works with DHL, its official logistics partner, to streamline the delivery of equipment, via group shipments and team coordination. At the end of December, after the stages in Park City and Lake Placid, the equipment had thus been grouped together to be transported to Europe and then redistributed, rather than multiplying individual solutions.

« The collaboration between the International Luge Federation and DHL marks a decisive step towards a sustainable future for winter sports. Since the 2023-24 season, DHL has been the federation's official logistics partner, providing support in transport, processes and planning. » emphasizes the FILThe organization is also exploring the possibility of using sustainable fuels for air and road transport in order to further reduce CO2 emissions.
