San Salvador remains alone on the track

America

The field is becoming clearer in the race to organize the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2022. Two candidates were in the running, El Salvador with its capital, San Salvador, and Puerto Rico with the city of Mayagüez. Today there is only one left. The Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (COPUR) confirmed the withdrawal of Mayagüez's candidacy. The cause is the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was estimated that hosting the Games in Puerto Rico required a budget of approximately $70 million. An amount considered too high by the country's authorities in the midst of a health crisis. Now alone on the track, El Salvador should be awarded the hosting of the next edition of the continental event. San Salvador has already organized the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1935 and 2002. For the 2022 edition, the competitions should have been held in Panama, but the country gave up last year due to financial difficulties.
