Salt Lake City expects the jackpot

2034 Winter Games

Very strong. The Americans did not wait for the formal vote of the IOC session, which is to be held on Wednesday July 24 in Paris, to already calculate the economic impact of the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City and Utah. The site The Sport Examiner reports that a study by the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah estimates it at $6,63 billion. In detail, the Winter Games in 2034 are expected to bring in $4,1 billion in gross direct spending, and $2,6 billion for Utah in net Games-related spending. The study suggests that for every dollar of the state's planned $2,6 billion budget, $1,54 will be injected into long-term economic activity, thanks in particular to wages paid to workers and contracts with businesses. The same study recalls that the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City brought in more revenue for the city and Utah, with an economic impact of $7,5 billion (in 2023 dollars). A difference which can be explained by the very different nature of the two projects. For 2002, the Americans had invested massively in the construction of the sites. For 2034, they plan to reuse existing equipment.
