Elections next year

have

The road still seems long for AIBA towards a return to the Olympic movement, but the international boxing body continues to move forward. Its board of directors, meeting this week by videoconference, established the calendar for the next elections. They will take place in 2022, at a date still undetermined. Before that, AIBA will organize an annual congress on December 12, 2021, presented as an intermediate step before next year's elective general assembly. Elected in December 2020, Russian Umar Kremlev will therefore put his mandate as president back into play next year. Another decision: the elections of athlete representatives within the AIBA decision-making bodies will take place on the sidelines of the men's world championships, scheduled from October 24 to November 6, 2021 in Belgrade (Serbia). For female representatives, the vote will also be held during the world meeting, but its date and location are not yet known. Finally, the board of directors validated the principle of equality between male and female boxers for the prize money distributed to world championship medalists. Suspended from the Olympic movement since June 2019, the AIBA remains under threat of an extension of this sidelining. Last week, the IOC pointed out in a letter signed by its general director, Christophe De Kepper, all the gray areas of its organization and governance.
