New blow for Brazil

Football

Troubles are piling up in Brazil. Part of the plastic membrane covering the roof of the brand new stadium in Salvador de Bahia broke on Monday after torrential rains in the capital of the state of Bahia (north-eastern Brazil), three weeks before the start of the Confederations Cup. No injuries were reported and only the eastern sector of the stadium, which will also host matches for the 2014 World Cup, was affected. Damaged equipment is subject to an assessment aimed at establishing the causes of the incident, determining whether the roof structure has suffered and assessing the repairs to be carried out. The installation of the roof membrane with a surface area of 36.000 m2, made of high-performance plastic and fiberglass, mobilized a team of 75 people for almost two months. The first Confederations Cup match to be played there is scheduled for June 20, between Nigeria and Uruguay. On the 22nd, Italy will meet Brazil and on the 30th, the stadium will host the match for 3rd place.
