Looking for candidate to join the IOC

South Korea

The approach is not common. The South Korean Olympic Committee (KSOC) has begun a process to select a new IOC member. The country currently has one full member, Lee Kun-hee, and another under the Athletes' Commission, Olympic table tennis champion Ryu Seung-min. But the first, honorary president of the Samsung group, who joined the IOC in 1996, has been hospitalized since May 2014 and has no active role within the institution. As for the second, elected by his peers at the Rio 2016 Games, he will not be able to remain a member of the IOC for more than 8 years. With the prospect of hosting the Olympic movement at the PyeongChang 2018 Games, the KSOC began looking for a candidate likely to join the organization, if possible from the Lima session next September. Two personalities are announced favorites: Lee Kee-heung, the current president of the national Olympic committee, and Cho Yang-ho, the former boss of the organizing committee for the PyeongChang 2018 Games, co-president of the Hanjin group, president of the South Korean Table Tennis Federation.
