Lionel Messi leaves with his hands full

Laureus

No surprise, Monday May 8, during the Laureus trophy presentation evening organized in Paris. The favorites left with at least one reward in their pocket. And even two for Lionel Messi, who for the occasion became the first athlete to be doubly rewarded in the same edition. The Argentinian was named Male Athlete of the Year 2022. He was also called on the stage at the time of the presentation of the Laureus trophy for the best team, awarded to the Argentine selection crowned football world champions in Qatar. Lionel Messi had already won the individual trophy in 2020, but he shared it with British driver Lewis Hamilton. Another winner of the Parisian evening: Jamaican Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, world champion in the 100m for the fifth time last summer in Eugene (United States), named Female Athlete of the Year. Also announced as favorite, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, winner of the US Open tennis tournament and ranked number one in the world for several weeks, received the Revelation of the Year trophy. Danish international Christian Eriksen was awarded the trophy comeback of the year, for relaunching his career with Manchester United after suffering a cardiac arrest in the middle of a Euro 2021 football match. Switzerland's Catherine Debrunner received the Sportsman with a Disability award for winning the Berlin and London marathons after setting world records in the sprint events. The Chinese Eileen Gu, double Olympic freestyle ski champion, logically won the prize in the extreme sports category. Finally, the Laureus Sport for Good prize went to TeamUp, a program for children displaced by war, run by Polish football player Robert Lewandowski.
