Heads keep rolling

Tokyo 2020

Tokyo 2020

The corruption scandal linked to the Tokyo 2020 Games is not over in Japan. He's even getting back to full speed, after a break of a few months. A Tokyo court on Tuesday, December 12, sentenced a former head of operations for the organizing committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Yasuo Mori, to two years in prison. He is accused of having played a central role in the award without calls for tender of numerous contracts for the organization of test events and Olympic events, for a total value of more than $300 million. Yasuo Mori never disputed the facts. But he tried to justify his actions by the need not to take the slightest risk by soliciting reliable and recognized event agencies, even if it meant circumventing market rules. It appears that his arguments convinced the court, with prosecutors in the case seeking a two-year prison sentence without any suspension. Since the start of the affair, six companies, including the Dentsu agency and its rival Hakuhodo, and seven people, have already been charged.
