More than two years have passed since the end of the Rio 2016 Games. In the Brazilian city, the Olympic installations are experiencing a sometimes distressing fate. But according to a study conducted by the Brazilian Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA), the event had a positive impact on the local economy. Unveiled by the IOC, the survey ensures that, without the Games in 2016, the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of the Brazilian city would have been 7,5% lower during the period preceding the event (2012- 2015), and lower by 5,1% in Greater Rio. The 2016 Games therefore helped to alleviate, for Rio de Janeiro and its surrounding areas, the consequences of the worst recession ever recorded in Brazil. The study suggests that “ In a national macroeconomic landscape in intense crisis, the Games delayed and mitigated the effects of this crisis on Rio's per capita GDP. Its results indicate a positive and growing effect of considerable magnitude throughout the period"
