Freeride joins the FIS

Ski

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) concluded its 55th annual congress on Wednesday June 5, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, with a second day as busy as the first. After assigning the day before a strong lot of world championships for the end of the decade, the body also renewed its council of 18 members by vote (photo above). Eight of them were already in office and were re-elected. But the bulk of the troops – ten members – are now made up of new entrants. Among them, as representatives of traditional ski nations, we can cite the Austrian Michael Huber, the Frenchman Fabien Saguez, the Norwegian Tove Moe Dyrhaug, the Swede Karin Mattsson, the Swiss Jean-Philippe Rochat, and the American Dexter Paine. Another decision approved by the congress: the integration of freeride, in skiing and snowboarding, as a full-fledged FIS discipline. The congress also approved the entry of two Para Snow Sports representatives, and not just one, as athlete representatives on the council. One of them is already known: the New Zealander Adam Hall. The second, a woman, has yet to be designated. Finally, the delegates of the 74 nations present at the congress voted for the admission of two new associate members: Guinea-Bissau and Qatar.
