FIG tackles population ageing

Gymnastics

A public health issue. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has launched the Ageing Society program to promote physical activity among seniors. It has just organized a first event, in partnership with the Indonesian federation, in Jakarta, which will host the World Championships next October. It brought together 115 people, up to 93 years, around the measurement of various health parameters and gymnastics demonstrations. "Many countries are facing the challenge of an ageing population, said Morinari Watanabe, president of FIG. This phenomenon has a significant impact on the social security costs, because the younger and smaller population cannot afford the costs for the older and larger population. FIG's Ageing Society programme addresses this issue and enables countries to work on measures to alleviating the problems of an aging society using specific gymnastics programs." Elderly people are encouraged to exercise at home using a smartphone app allowing them to track their progress, their general health and to share their data with medical institutions if necessary.
