FIBA is taking root in Southeast Asia. The world basketball body has announced the opening of a new permanent office in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, one of the three host countries (along with Japan and the Philippines) of the men's World Cup in 2023. "FIBA Indonesia will contribute to supporting the growth of basketball at all levels across the country, with a focus on grassroots programs, organizational growth and strengthening basketball institutions”, FIBA explained in a statement. Among the goals of the Jakarta office: an increase in the number of players, coaches and officials throughout the country, with a particular focus on women's practice and coaching, and a social impact of basketball-related activities. Proof of the importance for Indonesia of the opening of the FIBA office: the presence at the inauguration of the head of state, Joko Widodo, and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Dito Ariotedjo (photo above). The office will be headed by Rufiana, the director of FIBA Indonesia, one of the major players in the local organizing committee of the 2023 World Cup in Jakarta.
