China closes its borders to international sport

China

Worrying. China has decided to no longer organize certain major events on the international sports calendar until the end of 2020. The announcement was made on Thursday July 9 by the General Administration of Sports. A radical and little-expected measure, justified by the need to curb the spread of the coronavirus. This decision should, logically, affect the Chinese Formula 1 Grand Prix in Shanghai, the tennis tournaments on the ATP circuit, including the Shanghai Masters 1000, and WTA (Shenzhen Masters), but also the Guangxi cycling Tour . Two stages of the Athletics Diamond League are also planned before the end of the season, in Shanghai on September 19, then in a still undetermined city on October 17. On the other hand, the pre-Olympic events for the Beijing Winter Games in 2022 are not threatened. The same preferential treatment would be reserved for “ other important events", suggest the Chinese authorities, but without specifying their nature.
