The year 2024 is not only an Olympic year for the International Canoe-Kayak Federation (ICF). It will also be marked by the 100th anniversary of the creation of the body. The first international canoe-kayak association was founded on January 19, 1924 in Copenhagen, at the initiative of the national federations of Denmark, Germany, Austria and Sweden. It gave itself a Germanic name, “Internationale Repräsentantenschaft für Kanusport”, abbreviated “IRK”. The ICF replaced the IRK in 1946. The body currently has 171 member countries. It manages 10 disciplines, including two Olympic ones (sprint and slalom). To celebrate its centenary, the ICF plans to publish a commemorative book and put online on its official website, throughout the year, a series of articles recounting the key moments of canoeing over the years.
