Calgary wants to replace China

Ski

The Canadian city of Calgary, Alberta, is applying to organize the next freestyle skiing and snowboarding world championships, initially planned for this year in China (February 18 to 28), but canceled due to the crisis sanitary. The withdrawal of the Chinese led the International Ski Federation (FIS) to reopen a call for applications. The Calgary Canadians are responding, with the desire to create a health bubble based on the model of the one set up at the beginning of the month in Edmonton for the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The freestyle skiing and snowboarding world championships could be held from February 24 to March 11, 2021. But two conditions remain to be met before the Calgary project can be realized. And they're not thin. The first will be to obtain the green light from municipal, provincial and federal health authorities. The second will consist of finding funding for an event whose budget is estimated at 10 million Canadian dollars (around 6,5 million euros). Canada last hosted the Freestyle Skiing World Championships in 2001 in Whistler, British Columbia, and the Snowboarding World Championships in 2013 in Stoneham. The two events have been organized jointly since 2015. They take place every two years.
