Surprising. Hungary announced on Wednesday May 10 its decision to abandon the organization of the next European figure skating championships. They were scheduled for January 2024 in the capital, Budapest. Reason given: a lack of budget. The Hungarian Skating Federation (MOKSZ) explained in a statement: “ Due to the continuing war on our doorstep, its impact on the economy and energy prices which significantly affect skating, the national federation has decided to give up after careful consideration. We no longer have sufficient financial resources to hold a high-level competition. » According to national media, the leaders of Hungarian skating would have taken the decision to return the continental event, awarded by the ISU in 2021, for failing to obtain support from the political authorities. The ISU announced that it had launched a new call for applications to host the 2024 European Championships. Deadline for submitting a file: May 26, 2023. Hungary had already cited a budget problem at the start of the year, to partially disengage from the organization of the women's handball Euro in 2024, which it must host with Austria and Switzerland. Two Hungarian cities were affected, Budapest and Debrecen. But only the second will receive meetings. No worries, however, for the major event planned in Hungary in 2023: the Outdoor Athletics World Championships (August 19 to 27).
