Boycott or sanction

Ukraine

It's done. The Ukrainian government officially adopted this week a resolution intended to sanction national sports federations whose athletes participate in international competitions involving Russian and/or Belarusian athletes. The threat was made at the beginning of the month by the Ministry of Sports, after the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board to the international federations to open the door to a return of athletes from the two countries, under conditions and individually. The resolution was adopted by the cabinet of ministries. It therefore becomes enforceable. Nothing surprising in this. But by threatening sanctions against national federations whose athletes participate in competitions in the presence of Russians and Belarusians, as is already the case in tennis, Ukraine is deviating from the Olympic rules, where it is written that political power must not intervene in the decisions of the sports movement.
