Berraf re-elected but contested

Confused situation in the Algerian Olympic movement. Mustapha Berraf, the outgoing president of the national Olympic committee (COA), was certainly re-elected during the last weekend, during the organization's general assembly. He obtained 80 votes against 45 for his opponent, Abdelhakim Dib, the president of the Algerian Athletics Federation (FAA). But nothing was simple. And the story may not be over. To win a new mandate, the fifth, Mustapha Berraf had to battle against the current Minister of Youth and Sports, Ould Ali El Hadi. After repeatedly expressing his criticism of the outgoing president, the Algerian minister pushed for the members of the general assembly to vote in favor of his rival, Abdelhakim Dib.

Above all, no fewer than 38 statutory members of the COA general assembly (AG), including several federation presidents, filed an appeal. They complain about “serious irregularities throughout the process of renewing the executive body of the COA. » In a press release sent on Sunday, May 28 to the media, the 38 protesters denounce an “electoral masquerade orchestrated by the president of the candidacy commission and member of the outgoing executive office of the COA, Mr. Rabah Bouarifi, appointed with the sole aim of manipulating the electoral process for the benefit of a single person, in this case, the outgoing president.”

The day before, 6 members of the COA executive office, just elected, resigned to protest against the “conditions in which the vote took place”. The former captain of the Algerian volleyball team, Fatima-Zohra Oukazi, member of the general assembly and the electoral commission, also contacted the appeals commission to “request an extraordinary elective GA. »
