An increasingly elitist WorldTour

UCI

Change in sight for the UCI WorldTour. The International Cycling Federation announces in a press release the adoption of new rules for the first circuit of the professional peloton, following a meeting earlier this week in Geneva of the Professional Cycling Council (CCP). “Since the start of the UCI WorldTeams registration procedure for 2017, it has become clear that 18 candidates will apply to obtain a UCI WorldTeam license,” explained the press release. Based on this observation, the CCP decided that for the 2017 and 2018 seasons, a maximum of 18 licenses could be issued. In the medium term, the ambition is to strengthen competitiveness at the high level and therefore to establish the maximum number of UCI WorldTeams at 17 in 2019 and 16 from 2020.”
