Almost perfect parity

Rowing

The International Rowing Federation (World Rowing) has published the list of entrants for the Paris 2024 Olympic regatta. The fleet of 503 rowers will represent 65 national Olympic committees. It will display almost perfect parity: 251 athletes on the women's side, 252 on the men's side. The body explains that 502 rowers had obtained their qualification, or 251 for each of the two sexes, but that it accepted the IOC's request to add an additional universality quota place for Sudan in the men's single scull. In Vaires-sur-Marne, site of the rowing and canoeing events, more than half of the rowers will take part in their very first Olympic regatta. Romania and the United States qualified the most boats, with 12 boats each. Next come the Netherlands and Great Britain, with ten boats each. Host country France qualified five boats. The oldest of the competitions is an Estonian, Tonu Endrekson. At 45, he is participating in his sixth Olympic Games. The youngest competitor is a Dane, Frida Foldager, aged 18.
