A surplus of $55 million

PYEONGCHANG 2018

The IOC can breathe: PyeongChang 2018 will not be added to the list of Games having left a slate for the taxpayer to clean up. On the first day of the Buenos Aires session, Monday October 8, the president of the organizing committee for the last Winter Olympics, Lee Hee-beom, presented his final report. It revealed a surplus of $55 million, much higher than the result of $10 million announced a few months earlier. Unsurprisingly, the IOC took part of the credit for the profit made by the South Koreans, made possible according to it by the resolutions of Agenda 2020 and the recommendations of the New Standard. In a press release, the Olympic organization lists some of the measures that could explain such a result: the turnkey supply by the IOC of Olympic information services, the 30.000 accredited seats put back on sale for the public, the elimination of the second mountain broadcast center, a 30% smaller international radio and television center (IRTV) and a main press center (CPP) moved into an existing structure. Under the rules used at the Games, the $55 million surplus will be divided between the IOC, the organizing committee and the South Korean Olympic committee. A good deal for everyone, therefore, including the IOC.
