A limited Olympics effect on tourism

Paris 2024

No time to waste. Only ten days have passed since the end of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, but a tourism assessment has already been proposed. Its results turned out to be rather positive, as expected, but without reaching peaks. The site parisjetaimeestimates that the overall volume of visitors in the Greater Paris metropolis, between July 23 and August 11, was 11,2 million people, between tourists, “excursionists” (day visitors), and Ile-de-France residents. This figure represents an increase of 4% compared to the same period in 2023. Another discovery of this first study: the French accounted for the vast majority (85%) of all visitors to the Olympic Games. Among the 1,7 million foreign visitors, the top three countries are the United States (230.000 tourists), Germany (130.000), and the United Kingdom (115.000). Excursionists (day visitors, mainly French, coming from a region other than Ile-de-France) represent 3,1 million people, a volume comparable to the year 2023. Finally, the study shows that accommodation benefited from a real Olympic Games effect, with hotel occupancy rates increasing in all departments adjoining the capital: +13,1 points in Seine-Saint-Denis, +8,3 in Val-de- Marne, +13,1 in Hauts-de-Seine. In inner Paris, the hotel occupancy rate reached 84% between July 23 and August 6, up 10% compared to 2023.
