The German government is not forgetting high-level sport in its plan to support the national economy. He decided to grant 200 million euros in aid to professional sports leagues affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This federal fund concerns the basketball, handball, ice hockey and volleyball championships. With the exception of the third division, football is not included in this support program, because it benefits from a specific plan already detailed by the German authorities. Clubs in the first two divisions of the four indoor sports may be reimbursed up to 80% of the net income they should have received from ticket sales, between April and December 2020, with a ceiling of €800.000 per club. According to Frank Steffel, a Christian Democrat MP from Berlin, the funds could be increased in the event of new health restrictions during the second half of the season. Parliament must still definitively validate the application of this support plan for professional team sports.
