Team Canada coach loses accreditation

Paris 2024

Canada is experiencing a successful Paris 2024 Games on a sporting level – 17 medals including 5 gold on the morning of August 6 – but more difficult behind the scenes. After the drone incident before the football tournament, another case forced the National Olympic Committee (COC) to open the sanctions box. It announced that it had withdrawn his accreditation from the American Rana Reider (photo above), the coach of Canadian sprinters Andre De Grasse and Italian Marcell Jacobs. “Rana Reider has received accreditation as a personal trainer, which only provides access to the warm-up area and track and field training venues, explains the COC in a press release. The decision to grant him this access was based on the understanding that his probation period with the United States Center for Safety in Sport (USCSS) ended in May 2024, that he was not under any other suspension or any other sanction, and that he otherwise met our eligibility requirements. On Sunday, August 4, we were made aware of new information regarding the appropriateness of Mr. Reiner's continued accreditation by Team Canada to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. After discussions with Athletics Canada, it was decided that Mr. Reider's accreditation be revoked.» Rana Reider was implicated in 2021 by the US Center for Safesport (USCSS) for “abusive sexual behavior” with an 18 year old athlete. The coach did not dispute the facts, but supported the thesis of consent. Sunday August 5, Times revealed that three women had taken legal action against him, including for sexual abuse.
