A Georgian at the gates of history

Shooting

A page of history could well be written during the shooting competition of the Paris 2024 Games. Georgian Nino Salukvadze (photo above), 54, will perhaps become the first female athlete to participate in ten editions of the Olympic Games. She won a quota for her country, in the 25m pistol event at the European Games in Poland, where she took fourth place. Nino Salukvadze currently occupies 48th place in the world rankings, but no other athlete from her country today seems able to beat her in the race for Olympic qualification. After making her debut at the age of 19 at the Seoul Games in 1988, where she wore the colors of the Soviet Union and won a gold and another silver medal, she won a third medal – in bronze – for Georgia at the 2008 Beijing Games. In Tokyo, in 2021, she became the first woman to participate in nine Olympic Games. If he attends the Paris 2024 Games next year, Nino Salukvadze would equal the record of ten participations held by Canadian rider Ian Millar, present continuously at all editions between Munich 1972 and London 2012.
