Triathlon is among the sports most exposed to climate change. World Triathlon has presented its environmental strategy to contribute and preserve its competitive framework. It is based on five principles: integrity and transparency in all actions in favor of the environment; decision-making based on scientific data ; precaution in the face of environmental risks; respect for natural ecosystems; collaboration between all stakeholders.
World Triathlon thus aims to be " a pillar of environmental responsibility in the field of sport and to make sustainability a criterion in all its decisions. She cites a number of measures to achieve the carbon neutrality by 2040 and to minimize its footprint. It promises toto provide resources to national federations and event organizers (training, tools for measuring and reducing emissions…) to support them.
She also wants to use 100% renewable energy in its offices, implement a carbon budget, include an environmental clause in all contracts from 2026 onwards, eliminate single-use plastics at events, implement guidelines relating to derivative products and sustainable materials, or halve the amount of waste sent to landfill for all World Triathlon events.
The goal is for all these measures to be implemented by 2030. World Triathlon's commitment to sustainability has already been praised, notably by the IOC, which selected the FI among the finalists for the Climate Action 2025 awards.
