World Triathlon adjusts transgender rules

Triathlon

The International Triathlon Federation has updated its regulations regarding eligibility of transgender athletes, established in August 2022. It is now establishing an open category by age group. Transgender triathletes, both male and female, can now compete freely in this category, without medical or legal criteria. Eligibility in the Elite women's category remains subject to a four-year course. Athletes wishing to access this category must“provide a written statement of their gender identity and maintain serum testosterone levels below 2,5 nmol/L during the four-year eligibility period and beyond”, explains World Triathlon. "They are required to participate in a minimum number of races in the open category by age group for the first three years and in the Elite Women's category for the final year, before eligibility rights are fully granted", the federation said, adding that athletes must participate " to academic research during the last three years » of the process. Transgender male athletes can compete in the Elite category by submitting a simple signed declaration of male identity. “Equivalent eligibility rules apply to para triathlon, except that transgender female athletes must compete in para triathlon men's category during years 1-3 of the eligibility process, as there is no open race category for para triathlon based on age”, completes the instance.
