World Athletics has revealed its finalists

Athletics

The list is getting shorter. After distilling the cast of nominees for the 2024 World Athletes of the Year awards over three consecutive weeks, World Athletics has revealed the identity of the last contenders: the finalists. There are 12 of them, two men and two women for each of the three categories. Unsurprisingly, they are all at least one time gold medalists at the Paris 2024 Games, with the exception of Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich, selected after the online vote for her marathon world record. One notable absentee: American Noah Lyles, Olympic champion in the 100m and silver medalist in the 200m. For the World Athlete of the Year trophy in track races, the decision will be made, in the women's category, between Julien Alfred (Saint Lucia – 100m), and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (United States – 400m hurdles and 4x400m), and in the men's category between Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway – 1.500m and 5.000m) and Letsile Tebogo (Botswana – 200m). In the field events, the finalists are Yaroslava Mahuchikh (Ukraine – high jump) and Nafissatou Thiam (Belgium – heptathlon) in the women's category, Armand Duplantis (Sweden – pole vault) and Miltiadis Tentoglou (Greece – long jump) in the men's category. Finally, the off-stadium race category saw Ruth Chepngetich (Kenya – marathon) and Sifan Hassan (Netherlands – marathon) selected for the women, and Brian Pintado (Ecuador – 20km walk) and Tamirat Tola (Ethiopia – marathon) for the men. The winners will be announced at the World Athletics gala evening on 1 December in Monaco.
