The die is cast! The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has defined the 12 weight categories that will be featured at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic GamesMen will be able to compete in the 65 kg, 75 kg, 85 kg, 95 kg, 110 kg or over 110 kg categories. In Paris, they had to be divided into five categories: 61 kg, 73 kg, 89 kg, 102 kg and over 102 kg.

For women, the six weight classes chosen for Los Angeles are: 53 kg, 61 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 86 kg, and over 86 kg. In 2024, they had five options: 49 kg, 59 kg, 71 kg, 81 kg, and over 81 kg. The IOC has authorized the IWF to add two categories compared to Paris 2024, citing in particular the health of athletes.

The Olympic categories are getting closer and closer to those of the IWF events. They are now identical, with four exceptions: the IWF adds the 60 and 70 kg categories for men, as well as the 49 and 57 kg categories for women.
