The Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games are taking shape

Mediterranean Games

The next Mediterranean Games will be held from August 21 to September 3, 2026, in Taranto (Italy). The outlines of the event are becoming more and more apparent, as evidenced by the results of the meeting between the organizing committee and the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games (ICMG) in December. Iakovos Filippousis, Secretary General of the ICMG, thus welcomed « the active involvement of the Italian governmentin the organisation of the 2026 Mediterranean Games, starting with the appointment of the President and Commissioner of the COJM Taranto 2026, Massimo Ferrarese, and the approval of the initial budget of over 300 million euros." The Greek is convinced" hat Taranto will be ready on the day of the opening ceremony to offer our athletes an unforgettable experience", and potentially "the best Games ever organised". A new nautical center must be built to host the competition. Its construction should begin in March and be completed in early 2026.

The horizon is also clearing for Alicante, the only candidate to host the 2031 Mediterranean Beach Games. "Ms. Raquel Hernández Carbonell presented Alicante's candidacy to host the 2031 Mediterranean Beach Games, on behalf of the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Municipality of Alicante, delivering a detailed proposal that was positively evaluated and approved by the members of the executive committee", specifies the ICMG. An evaluation commission will visit the city of the Costa Blanca in the spring, before Alicante is officially designated as host, barring any developments, at the next general assembly of the ICMG.
