Safety first. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has implemented a new protective mask certification program worn by players. Based on research conducted by the Sports Technology Institute at Loughborough University, it willincrease impact protection standards.
« Knowing that their head protection equipment has been independently tested and is recommended by the FIH allows athletes to have peace of mind and focus on their performance without worrying about equipment failure ", justifies the federation.
Earlier this year, the FIH made wearing a face mask mandatory for all players defending a penalty corner in the competitions it governs, with the aim of reducing risks and avoiding head injuries. Previously, only the goalkeeper was required to wear protective equipment.
