Russia excluded from Paris 2024 Games

Gymnastics

140 days before the Paris 2024 Games, Russia has just removed a new discipline from the list of sports where it can still qualify athletes for Olympic competitions. It is now certain that the Russian gymnasts will not get their ticket. They are not on the entry list for the World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan, one of the stages of the qualification course. The competition began on Thursday March 7. According to the regulations of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), quotas for the Paris 2024 Games are awarded by accumulating the results obtained in three of the four stages of the 2024 World Cup. The Russians were unable to participate in the events organized in Cairo (February 15-18), then in Cottbus (February 22-25). Their absence from the Baku competition this week wipes out their chances of participating in the Paris 2024 Games. As a reminder, gymnastics represents a very particular case in the Olympic movement on the Russian question: its international body, the FIG, decided to follow the IOC's recommendation by reinstating the Russian athletes, but the European Gymnastics Union (UEG) took a contrary position last December by maintaining their suspension from its competitions.
