Recycled balls reach international level

Table tennis

For the first time, recycled plastic balls were used in an international table tennis competition, Europe Smash, in Malmö (Sweden). This model, the DHS RS40+, is made up of more than 65% raw materials from household appliances such as refrigerators, televisions, or washing machines, giving waste a second life without compromising the quality of the bounce. It was validated by the ITTF in March and players were able to test it ahead of the tournament. Trials were also conducted during certain competitions.

« It is the result of hard work, said ITTF President Petra Sörling. From the beginning of my first term, we have made sustainability a priority. (…) After a long process of research, testing and trials with the participation of players, we have finally crossed this important step : to compete with a recycled ball that meets the expectations and standards of high-level table tennis. I am both delighted and proud that, thanks to the joint commitment of all parties involved, we have achieved this goal in such a short time. »

Steve Dainton, ITTF Group Chief Executive, also welcomed the progress: “ What DHS has created here proves that innovation does not have to compromise performanceThe RS40+ has been tested by the best, approved by the best players and stands up to the pressure of the Grand Smash. »
