A small revolution in sports in the United States. No less. The United States Track and Field Federation (USATF) and the National Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) have reached a historic agreement that will see para athletics now pass from the hands of the second body (USOPC) to those of the first (USATF). As of January 1, 2025, American Paralympic athletes will no longer be under the jurisdiction of the USOPC, but of the athletics federation. They will thus be able to benefit from the same support and programs as able-bodied athletes. Not really a coincidence: this decision follows the excellent results obtained by the United States in athletics at the Paris 2024 Games: 34 medals including 14 gold in Olympic competitions, then 38 medals including 10 gold in Paralympic events. Also not a coincidence: it comes less than four years before the Los Angeles 2028 Games, where the United States will undoubtedly aim even higher. Explanation from Sarah Hirshland, USOPC CEO: " We are committed to working on this integration model because we know it will allow Paralympic athletes to fully access a suite of resources, support and training as they strive for excellence and represent Team USA.» USATF becomes the 17th sports federation in the United States to integrate Paralympic athletes. In May 2023, the American Ski and Snowboard Federation announced a similar initiative.
