UCI adopts GPS for rider safety

Cycling

A first at the Road World Championships: a GPS runner tracking will be in place to strengthen their security throughout the week in Kigali, Rwanda. This system has already been tested during the women's Tour de Romandie in August. The device will be attached under the saddle of all the riders involved. It will allow real-time tracking of the position and speed data of the entire peloton and thus immediately identify " any unusual situation, such as a runner suddenly stopping on the course ».

The competent services will be able to intervene quickly if necessary by accessing the exact position of the runner. The introduction of a GPS safety tracking system for runners is an important and necessary step forward, assures the president of the UCI, David Lappartient. Thanks to it, any incident or accident that may have gone unnoticed can be identified quickly, and it will be possible to provide assistance to the person concerned as quickly as possible by mobilizing the actors already on the ground and the emergency services. » The UCI then hopes to deploy this system on a larger scale.
