The United Nations has declared 2025 as International Year of Glacier ConservationThe International Skating Union (ISU) announced its support for the initiative as rapid melting of glaciers due to climate change has contributed to a 23cm rise in sea levels since 1990. « Ice is essential to our sport and, like everyone else on the planet, we are intimately connected to our natural environment. We We feel deeply responsible for protecting glaciers which are essential to billions of lives and to our planet's ecosystems, insists Jae Youl Kim, president of the ISU. Thousands of outdoor skating rinks, frozen rivers, canals and other natural ice surfaces are central to the origins and rich history of skating. Skating must rise to this challenge by playing a central role in raising awareness of the impacts of climate change and advocating for the preservation of glaciers.” The ISU will soon unveil initiatives in this direction, with the World Glacier Day on March 21 in the line of fire. The federation is already calling "the global ice skating community and the world of sport as a whole to unite in the mission of protecting glaciers".
