ISU allows 21 Russian skaters under neutral status

Skating

The International Skating Federation (ISU) has published the list of neutral individual athletes (AIN) who will be able to participate in the qualifying events for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games. Russian and Belarusian federations presented a list of skaters for figure skating, speed skating and short track, which the ISU scrutinized, based on the IOC recommendations. Public appearances and statements made by nominated athletes since February 2022 were reviewed. "in order toassess any active support for the invasion of Ukraine or any contractual relationship with the Russian or Belarusian military and other national security agencies."

"Although nominations were submitted for all disciplines and distances open to AIN participation, Not all nominated athletes passed this rigorous examination, says the ISU. By extension, their designated substitutes were also deemed ineligible, as substitution is only permitted in the event of injury, not for reasons of ineligibility. Therefore, there is certain disciplines or distances for which no AIN skater will be registered"

Four Russians and six Belarusians received the green light in figure skating. In the speed events, 17 Russians and five Belarusians will be able to compete. The final list of neutral athletes has been approved by the ISU Council, but remains subject to potential changes depending on the evidence that may be discovered. AINs and their substitutes will now have to follow a special anti-doping program to be able to participate in the Olympic qualifications. Anticipating criticism, the ISU concluded its statement by reiterating that it condemns the invasion of Ukraine and that it continues to provide financial support for Ukrainian athletes.
